The victim, identified as Sarabraj Singh of India, was found inside a Keller Street home near North Grove Street that was fully engulfed in flames at 11:22 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7, according to Nassau County Police.
The Valley Stream Volunteer Fire Department was notified of the fire at 11:25 a.m. Upon their arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from the home and transmitted a Signal 10 “Working Fire,” prompting mutual aid from surrounding communities.
Firefighters located Singh during a search of the home. He was removed with CPR in progress and transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead by a hospital physician.
Another victim, who had escaped through a second-floor window, was assisted off a garage roof, according to fire officials.
The fire, which began in the basement, quickly extended to the upper floors of the home, requiring three hose lines to extinguish the flames. Engine 341 and Tower Ladder 345 were first to arrive, with operations on scene lasting approximately two hours.
One firefighter sustained minor injuries during the fire and was transported to a hospital for treatment, officials said.
Chief Colucci served as the incident commander, with Chiefs Capone and O’Brien also on scene. The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s office and Arson/Bomb Squad are investigating the cause of the fire.
